The design-engineering integration nobody asks for, but everyone needs
The shortest path from Figma to production isn't a plugin. It's a working relationship — and a design system that engineers can extend without translation. A short read on the operating pattern.
Every design tool company will sell you a Figma-to-code plugin. Some of them are impressive. Almost none of them solve the actual problem — which is that most enterprise design teams and engineering teams operate on different tempos, and the artefacts they hand each other are optimised for the wrong reader.
The shift that pays back is upstream. Designers who write in the codebase's design-system tokens. Engineers who review Figma files before the layout is final. A design system that isn't a Storybook garden but a living contract about behaviour, accessibility, and responsive rules. When those three are true, the plugin doesn't matter — because the handoff was never a discrete event to begin with.
The counter-intuitive move: give the design system to engineering as a governance surface, not to design as an authoring surface. Design still owns aesthetics; engineering owns the API of the components. That inversion is uncomfortable in a lot of orgs, and it's the reason a lot of orgs still ship inconsistent product.
A working design-engineering integration also means design catches the second-order costs earlier — motion budgets, accessibility budgets, page-weight budgets, and the interaction patterns that are cheap to design and expensive to ship. Bringing engineering into those conversations at wireframe, not at handoff, changes what gets designed at all.
Where this pattern breaks: when the design team is measured on Dribbble and the engineering team is measured on velocity. Nobody is going to invest in the invisible work of a real design-engineering integration if the incentive structure is that lopsided. Fixing the incentives is the boring, unglamorous, and only work that matters.
